Gaithersburg History

The town of Gaithersburg was originally named Log Town due to its proximity to several large trees. In 1750, Benjamin Gaither bought land and built a home in the area that was eventually named after him. During the 1800s, the town was mostly a rural farming community. Later, the B & O Railroad was built across the area. Also an observatory was erected to track celestial objects and calculate the wobble of the Earth on its axis. Little changed until late in the 20th century when developers turned the sleepy town into a growing suburb.
